Since 1984, AMLA's Artists in Education have been making learning fun! History and culture come alive through rhythm and movement! AMLA sends expert arts educators into schools, colleges, community centers, and other organizations for interactive assembly programs, residencies, or tailor-made programs, depending on your needs. We also send out dance teachers to enliven any occasion!

School Assembly Programs

Our "Roots" programs are perennial favorites in Philadelphia area schools! In the hands-on segment of each program, students are invited to the stage to interact with the musicians and the audience!

  • Roots of Puerto Rican Music: Take your students to Puerto Rico, where three cultures converge: Spanish, African, and Taíno Indian. Students will see and hear the combination of the cuatro puertorriqueño (Puerto Rico's signature stringed instrument), guitar, keyboard, congas, bongos, timbales, hand percussion, and voices.
  • Roots of Latin Jazz: Take a journey of sight and sound, and experience the special language of Latin Jazz - a combination of jazz melodies and harmonies over a polyrhythmic Latin percussion base. Students will see and hear the combination of piano, bass, horns, drum set, and Latin percussion.
  • Roots of Afro-Brazilian Music: Take your students to Rio de Janeiro and Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, where they will see and hear the signature percussion orchestras and movement styles of Afro-Brazilian community celebrations, capoeira (an Afro-Brazilian martial art), and the national dance of Brazil, samba! Instruments featured include the surdo drums, reco-reco, pandeiro, tamborim, timbau, berimbau, cuíca, agogô bells, and more!
  • Roots of Cuban Music: This exciting program is under development - check back soon for more information!
