AMLA Anti-Violence Songwriting & High School Rock Band Program
A Fusion of Music, Message, and Movement
The Artists & Musicians of Latin America (AMLA) is proud to launch a newly integrated program that merges two of our most dynamic youth initiatives: the Anti-Violence Songwriting Program and the High School Rock Band. Designed for passionate, socially conscious youth musicians ages 15–20, this after-school program empowers students to write, produce, and perform original music that reflects their lived experiences and promotes positive change in their communities.
This powerful fusion of songwriting, band performance, and social justice advocacy provides students with the space to sharpen their artistic voice and amplify messages of nonviolence, healing, and resilience. Under the guidance of professional musicians and teaching artists, participants will explore Latin rock, original compositions, and socially-driven music while developing job-ready skills in songwriting, music production, ensemble performance, and live concert preparation.

Community Service Through the AMLA Anti-Violence Songwriting and High School Rock Band Program
Participation in the AMLA Anti-Violence Songwriting and High School Rock Band Program qualifies as community service because students contribute work which benefits the public through education, civic awareness, and community engagement. Students create music which addresses themes such as violence prevention, social responsibility, and civic participation. They share this work through public performances and outreach events which promote dialogue, encourage civic involvement, and strengthen community connections. Students also support one another through mentorship and collaboration, building leadership and service within a youth artistic community.
Program Description
The AMLA Anti-Violence Songwriting and High School Rock Band Program includes a structured community service component. Students participate in activities which promote civic awareness, violence prevention, and community engagement through music.
During the school year, students study topics related to non-violence, community responsibility, and civic participation. Students then write original songs and develop performances which communicate these ideas to the public. The work created in the program forms the basis for performances presented at community events and public programs throughout the year and during the summer concert season.
These performances serve an educational purpose. Students use music to share messages about violence prevention, positive community values, and civic participation. Some events also support civic initiatives such as voter awareness and community engagement efforts.
Students also contribute through peer mentorship and collaboration. Older or more experienced musicians help guide younger students during rehearsals and workshops. Participants learn how to work as an ensemble, support one another’s artistic development, and contribute to a collective creative project which benefits the broader community.
Community service hours may be documented through the following activities.
Participation in rehearsals and workshops focused on anti-violence themes
Songwriting and creative development addressing community issues
Public performances at community events and civic programs
Peer mentorship and leadership within the ensemble
Participation in outreach events which promote civic awareness
Service hours reflect the time students spend preparing, rehearsing, mentoring peers, and presenting performances which contribute to public education and community engagement.
Students who require verification for school service requirements may request documentation of their hours from AMLA. Schools and administrators may contact AMLA for additional information about the program and its community engagement activities.
