The Roots of Puerto Rican Music is one of AMLA’s most beloved educational programs—an energetic, interactive experience that introduces students to the diverse musical traditions of Puerto Rico. Presented in partnership with members of the acclaimed Timbalona Collective, this program celebrates the powerful cultural contributions of Puerto Rico’s Spanish, Taíno, and African heritage through live music, storytelling, and movement.
Designed for school-aged audiences and adaptable to various educational settings, the performance features a dynamic lineup of authentic instruments including the cuatro, guitar, bass, keyboard, congas, bongos, timbales, panderetas, claves, and voice. Narration by the artists guides students through the history and cultural context of each musical element. In a hands-on segment, students are invited to join the performers on stage—playing instruments and learning traditional dances of the island.
As part of AMLA’s Artist in Education programming, this cultural assembly is a joyful, memorable, and educational journey into Puerto Rican identity and sound. The inclusion of the Timbalona Collective, co-directed by Andrés Cisneros and Christian Noguera, enriches the program with Afro-Caribbean rhythms, dance, and percussion-based storytelling that brings the island’s traditions to life.
